Amazon's Cultural Difference

This project explores how differences between the United States and Chinese cultures could influence corporate strategy. The report compares the differences in Amazon's primary websites from two countries. The report shows how the website design differences reflect cultural norms, measured through Hofstede's dimensions of individualism, long-term orientation, and indulgence.

Reflections

Takeaways

  • Cultural and location factors can be far too complex to expect to succeed with a designer as an outsider.

  • Always find customers, SMEs, researchers, etc. and center those with the experience you’re trying to help. Don’t think you know more about someone’s culture than they do

  • Assume you don’t have all the context and are prepared to break any amount of design rules you used to use

  • Even with research, you won’t always know why potential customers think the way they do. Design in other countries has a huge extent of variation and difference from Western design standards.
